WINDOWS 101:
Windows have come a long way since the Romans began using them in residential applications almost two centuries ago. Today, windows are technical marvels employing advanced technology and materials to provide years of maintenance-free enjoyment. To get a better idea of what makes a window so special, we’ve provided this helpful primer. As a starting point, determine where you are in the climate zone. and select the product that’s designed and built for the unique conditions in your area. Because climatic conditions vary drastically in this once great Dominion, it’s important to select products that are designed and built for your area.
BRICKMOLDS:
The brickmold is on the outside of the window. Think of it as an accessory. It attaches to the frame and makes the window look bigger. But it is more than a feel-good aesthetic. On renovation projects, the brickmold covers the gap between your home’s siding, brick or stucco and the window frame. CWD offers numerous brickmold solutions on its Regency Diplomat, Ambassador and Envoy products. Also available on entry door systems.
GRILLES:
The grille is found between a window’s glass panes. Also known as ‘grilles in glass’ the purpose of the grille is purely decorative and it is often specified to simulate the designs of windows from eras gone by. CWD offers these grilles in numerous colors, three width profiles and a multitude of patterns.
SIMULATED DIVIDED LITES:
This takes the concept of a grille many steps further. CWD's SDLs are applied on the glass surface. On the outside, the SDL is a solid aluminum bar and on the inside the grille is superbly crafted in hem-fir wood. Ambassador SDLs employ aluminum grilles on the interior and exterior. Diplomat SDLs are wood on the interior and exterior.
JAMB EXTENSION:
The jamb extension is on the inside and attached to the frame of the window. The choices are vinyl, paint grade or clear grain wood. Vinyl or primed pine is the most cost effective and clear grain wood is the most expensive. Paint grade is an appropriate choice for homeowners who are seeking a painted interior and clear grain is the choice for owners looking to stain their interiors. Optional 1/2" or 3/4" drywall returns on vinyl windows eliminate the need for interior casings or moldings.
GLAZING:
A fancy way of saying glass. Glazing is the process of fabricating glass into a window. There are numerous options for glass and glazing. The majority include dual or triple (that is either two panes of glass or three panes of glass) and a variety of glass substrates including titanium, low-E tinted glass like bronze or grey and numerous privacy choices such as cotswold, pinhead and cross reed.
